Flickering lights are typically more of an annoyance than a cause for alarm. However, if you are experiencing flickering lights in your home or business, it is suggested to have it examined to make sure this is not just a symptom to a much larger issue that could potentially be harmful. Below is a list of the most common causes for flickering lights and which ones you should look out for in your home or business:
-Loose Bulb: This is a very common, and luckily simple problem lots of people who are experiencing flickering lights deal with. It may seem like an obvious thing to check for, but lots of people overlook this as the potential cause to their flickering lights. Especially with lights where the bulb is unexposed- such as in recessed lighting or elaborate fixtures that make it difficult to reach the bulb. Turn off your light, allow it ample time too cool, then check to see if it has been properly screwed in. If you still experience flickering lights after this, it may be time to call an electrician.
-LEDs and Fluorescent: With both of these types of lights, a little flickering is considered normal. Whenever you first turn on a fluorescent light it takes a minute to warm-up and will flicker for the first minute or so after you turn on the light. When LEDs are connected to dimming systems it is common to face light flickering here and there.
-Voltage Fluctuation: If your lights start to flicker whenever you use a high powered appliance such as an air conditioner, washing machine, or vaccum, this could be your voltage fluctuating too much. What this means is your home is being overpowered and cannot accommodate your electrical needs. This can become a serious issue and should be addressed by an electrician.
-Loose Electrical Wiring: Loose wiring is the most extreme and dangerous cause behind flickering lights. Loose wiring can lead to electrical fires that can destroy your home and put your family at risk. If you have checked all of the other above listed causes and have not narrowed down the reason behind your flickering lights, call Texas Electrical immediately.
